Dr Elene Robson - BSc (Hons), DClinPsy, PGcert

I am a Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years of experience working in the NHS, specialising in child and adolescent mental health.  This has allowed me to gain extensive experience in working with children, adolescents, young people, siblings and parents to overcome a wide range of psychological, emotional and behavioural difficulties.

I specialised for over 10 years at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, Devon working with children and young people with physical health conditions and associated difficulties such as anxiety and low mood. I then started working for a Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMHS) Team in South Devon, where I have worked as Clinical Lead for a service for young people with eating disorders. I continue to work in the CAMHS team part-time alongside working for The Family Psychology Practice.

I have completed additional training in a wide range of therapeutic approaches including: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy; Narrative Therapy, Family Therapy and Attachment-based Therapies, Adolescent-Focused Therapy for Anorexia, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness-based Therapies. I am also currently completing training in EMDR.  I feel passionately about my ability to integrate all of these models into my work, allowing me to truly tailor the way I work to meet the needs of each individual and family.

When I am not working, I love to spend time outdoors in the Devon countryside with my children and dog.

I have worked with children and families for over 20 years in a variety of different roles and have over 14 years’ experience working in the NHS within Child and Adolescent Mental Health services (CAMHS).  I studied in London at the Institute of Family Therapy and moved to Devon in 2017 where I met and began working with Elene.

Throughout my career, I have worked in several different CAMHS teams across the country and worked with children and families with a range of presenting difficulties including eating disorders, OCD, depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, trauma, and many more.

As a family therapist, I am trained in a range of different approaches to therapeutic work and hope to be able to find a method that feels helpful for you and/or your family.  I have a lot of experience working with families, parents, couples and also individuals, and pride myself on creating a safe and non-judgmental space where we can think about difficulties and nurture change.

Outside of work I enjoy being outdoors (especially when it’s sunny!), and spending time with family and friends.  I love going to the beach and having a nice cup of tea watching the world!

Dr Katy Smart - BSc (Hons) MSc, DClinPsy

I am a Clinical Psychologist with over ten years experience working in a variety of different mental health settings and supporting people across the lifespan with a range of difficulties. I am especially passionate about working with young people and their families to fulfil their goals and work towards living a rich, full, and meaningful life.

I currently work in a community Child and Adolescent Mental  Health Service (CAMHS) alongside working for The Family Psychology Practice. I have previously worked in an IAPT service and an adolescent inpatient hospital. I have extensive experience of providing support to young people struggling with a range of difficulties, including low mood, anxiety, OCD, and emotional dysregulation.

In my work with families I use a range of evidence-based models including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). My work is also informed by attachment theory and systemic therapy. I am able to use all of these models in my work, which means I can tailor sessions to work with individuals in the way that is most helpful to them.

What is a Clinical Psychologist?

Clinical Psychologists are highly skilled at undertaking a thorough psychological assessment to help work out with a family what is going to be the most helpful and effective treatment in overcoming the mental health difficulties. Clinical Psychologists are trained in a range of different therapies which means we are able to tailor the treatment as needed. Clinical Psychologists have many years of training and experience in working with people of all ages, including children and young people, in order to qualify. This takes many years, starting with an undergraduate degree in Psychology and then a doctorate degree, in total taking at least 6 years, but usually a lot longer, with the requirement to have experience in between the two degrees.

The term ‘Child Psychologist’ is not a protected title, which means anyone can decide to use this term even without the right training. At The Family Psychology Practice, we are trained Clinical Psychologists and are registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) which ensures we have the correct training and are accredited and regulated by this professional body. In addition, we are Clinical Psychologists who have chosen to specialise in working with children and young people, and have extensive expertise in this area. This means that as parents you can be reassured that you will be provided with the highest level of quality care for you and your loved one.

All of the work we offer is based on the latest evidence that it is effective, and is approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

What is Family & Systemic Psychotherapy?

Family Therapists help families in a range of ways. They can help when there are difficulties in the relationships between family members, they can help people in a family to understand each other better, and they can help families to talk about their feelings and make changes when behaviours can feel stuck.

Families are complex, with each family member being unique, with us all having different perspectives and experiences, and there being different relationships between all of the individuals in a family. It can often become difficult to talk about these things, and when challenging life events occur such as difficulties with mental health/illness/unexpected life events or even changes to family life, it can be hard for families to adapt. Family therapy can help by giving people a safe and supported space to discuss these things, to explore each other’s perspectives and to find new ways of being together and adapting, so that family life is easier to navigate.

Family therapy might involve working with a whole family, some member of the family or even working with individuals. The aim is to work collaboratively to help you to build on the strengths and resiliencies you have as a family, and to find new ways of understanding each other and working together.
